A different version about the Madhav Gadgil committee report. written by my friend Unni Mathews. Sharing this for everyone to know the feelings and worries of the people in Western Ghats.
"Dear Friends...i humbly request you to take a bit of ur precious time in reading this .It is just a nutshell of what at present is the condition of Idukki which the channels and politicians refuse to represent properly.
I hereby mark my deep hearted protest against the Gadgil and Kasthoorirangan committee reports which are based on nothing but selfish petty political interest. Friends..you may not be aware of the problems that are existing in Idukki and about its serious impact on the agriciltural and non agricultural community living in what is called High Range..No TV channel is taking our issues as required and the facts and agony of people are misrepresented instead of be
ing factually exposed to the world outside. If the govt is gonna implement the Kasthoorirangan report, life in Idukki is gonna be totally impossible as it prohibits all the activities that bring bread and water to the farmers here. No more Cardamom,black pepper,tapioca,Coffee,tea and many other agricultural products which are diluted in our blood!! what else even construction activities will need authorisation from all corners and departments situated far far away who will not give it just like that!!!
True, we need to ptotect environment, but not at the cost of a few people. It is the duty of every human being.But at present, what happens is only just projecting a part of the landscape as 'environmentally fragile' which eventually will make this area devoid of even human existence.
Dear environmentalists, i just have one question to you...if environment protection is your objective...then what about the carbon emissions from vehicles, huge industries and other human related activities in cities and devoloped countries. There you dont need any restrictions!!! (because you own shares an you fund them!!!") Why do you annihilate a group of people? why are you bothered only about studies and reports only based on satellite images and not the actual living conditions? Do you know that the population per square kilometer is more than 400-500 in the areas where you are gonna declare as environmentally fragile when your own report prohibits such an act in areas where the population per sq km. exceeds 100!! fools!! have you lost the very sixth sense that is the distinct nature differentiating human beings from animals??? are you insane??
We understand that your eyes are focussed on the huge amount of fund UNESCO is gonna provide in the name of heritage sites conservation...Shame on you!!shame on our political representatives who have cleverly sold us.....
but remember...the curse of thousands of ordinary farmers will stand over your head and will not leave you and generations to come...
save Idukki...save farmers...pls share....the cahnnels are only showing news that i of interest to them and those who fund them...they are unwilling to report the huge protest in high range against declaring villages in Idukki as ESA (Eco-logically Sensitive Area) which will make all signs of life disappear from these areas where people are densely populated... "
